Austin feels like a budget trip until you hit the BBQ, Rainey Street, and realize you've spent three days straight in bars. Then the math catches up.

Current Airbnb and hotel rates across Austin, restaurant and bar pricing from multiple neighborhoods, activity costs, and flight data from major US regions show what a 3-night guys trip actually costs for a group of 6.

The short version:

A 3-night Austin guys trip for a group of 6 costs roughly $600 to $1,200 per person, depending on where you stay, what you eat, and how much you spend on drinks.

Most groups fly in Thursday and leave Sunday, or Friday through Sunday. Summer weekends (June–August) run 25–35% more on Airbnbs compared to shoulder season. Spring and fall are cheaper and still warm enough.

Flights

Round-trip fares to Austin vary by region. Budget $150–$200 depending on where you're flying from.

West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle): $160–$300. Most people find fares $160–$200 if they book 4–6 weeks out. Budget carriers like Frontier occasionally drop below $200.

Mountain West (Denver, Salt Lake City): $56–$188. Denver to Austin has the cheapest fares in the country on any date. Mountain routes are short, usually under 2.5 hours.

Northeast (New York, Boston): $76–$365. East Coast flights take longer (3.5–4 hours) and cost more. Budget $220–$280 as a realistic average.

Central US (Dallas, Houston, Kansas City): $100–$180. Shortest flights from Texas neighbors. Dallas is ~3–3.5 hours from Austin (~195 miles), which is why some groups drive instead.

Book 4–6 weeks out. Booking within 2 weeks adds $50–$100 to your ticket. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are typically $20–$40 cheaper than Friday flights.

Accommodation

This is where group size matters. A shared Airbnb is almost always cheaper per person than hotel rooms.

Budget (3 nights)

A 3-bedroom Airbnb in East Austin or South Congress (away from downtown) runs $200–$300/night base rate. Add cleaning fees ($75–$180) and service fees (14–17%), plus Texas tax (15–17%). Total effective cost lands around $350–$450/night, or $175–220/person for 6 people over 3 nights.

East Austin (Holly Street area) has renovated apartments. South Congress has older ranch-style houses with pools and patios. You lose the downtown walk-ability but save money and get more space.

Balanced (3 nights)

A nicer 3-bedroom Airbnb in Rainey Street or downtown-adjacent areas runs $300–$400/night base rate. Same fee structure as budget. That works out to roughly $220–$260/person for 6 people over 3 nights. Rainey Street puts you walking distance from bars and restaurants. Downtown options exist but tend to be premium-priced on weekends.

Book 4–6 weeks out. Prices jump 30–40% in the final 2 weeks before a weekend.

Premium (3 nights)

A premium Airbnb or boutique hotel downtown. Upscale Airbnbs in downtown or near Barton Springs run $400–$600/night. Hotels downtown run $150–$250/night per room. For a group of 6, hotel math doesn't work as well—you need 3 rooms at $450–$750/night combined, which is $75–$125/person/night. The Airbnb math is better for groups.

Location is the main variable in Austin accommodation. East Austin gives you more space for less, while Rainey Street proximity costs more but saves on late-night Ubers.

Food & drink

This is where Austin gets interesting. BBQ, food trucks, and bars define the spend.

Budget: ~$40–50/day ($120–150 for 3 days)

Breakfast from your Airbnb (grocery run, $25 total for the group). Lunch at a food truck or casual spot: Torchy's Tacos runs $12–$20 per person for 2–3 tacos. Dinner at a food truck or casual spot runs $15–$20/person. Terry Black's Barbecue is worth a splurge at $35–$45/person for brisket and sides, but it'll push that day higher. Drinks: pre-game beers at the Airbnb from a liquor store, maybe 1–2 drinks out per night.

Two $6 beers a night for 3 nights is $36 before you've eaten anything. Most budget groups keep alcohol costs low by drinking at the house before going out.

Balanced: ~$60–80/day ($180–240 for 3 days)

Breakfast at a casual cafe or from the Airbnb ($8–$12). Lunch: taco shop or casual restaurant ($12–$18). One nicer dinner, probably BBQ: expect $25–$35/person at a sit-down place. Drinks: 3–4 per day across multiple bars. This is where most guys trips land. Someone wants to try Franklin Barbecue, someone wants happy hour on Rainey Street, and costs climb.

Franklin Barbecue is the signature Austin BBQ experience. It's expensive, the line is long, and nobody skips it. Brisket, ribs, sausage, and turkey run by the pound: figure $35–$55/person for a substantial meal. The tradeoff: it's 2–3 hour waits on weekends. Plan for it or skip it.

Rainey Street bars have house parties as their vibe. Drink prices are "pretty basic and overpriced" per reviews—$6–$8 for a beer, $12–$15 for a cocktail. 6th Street is rowdier, cover charges $0–$20 depending on venue and night, drinks similar. Budget $40–$60/person if you're planning a full night out on alcohol.

Premium: ~$100–130/day ($300–400 for 3 days)

Breakfast at a nice brunch spot ($20–$25). Lunch wherever you want ($18–$25). One or two nicer dinners: sit-down BBQ, steak, or upscale casual runs $40–$60/person. Drinks: whatever you want, no counting. Rooftop bars, craft cocktails, multiple outings. At this tier you're hitting $50–$70 on drinks across the day when you factor in morning coffee, afternoon beers, and night-out rounds.

Austin was ranked the 3rd most expensive night out in the US in a 2023 study. Most of that premium comes from drink prices and the Rainey Street bar scene being particularly pricey compared to other Texas cities.

Getting around

Airport transfer: Uber from Austin Bergstrom airport to downtown or Rainey Street is about $25–$35 per ride. Split among 6 people: $4–$6/person. Back to the airport on Sunday is the same.

Local rides: Ubers within the city typically run $15–$25. Rainey Street to 6th Street is $12–$18. Late-night surge after bars close around 2am: rides double or triple, so a $20 ride becomes $40–$60.

Total local transportation over 3 days:

Capital Metro bus is $1.25 per ride or $2.50 for a day pass. It's useful if you're downtown, but most groups default to Uber.

Activities

The signature Austin guys trip includes Rainey Street, 6th Street, and at least one outdoor activity.

Light activity: ~$30–50/person

Rainey Street and 6th Street are free entry (no cover at most bars, though some charge $10–$15 on weekends). Barton Springs Pool costs $9 for non-resident adults. The public natural spring pool runs cool year-round.

That's a full day for under $40/person if you skip paid attractions.

Moderate activity: ~$80–120/person

One paid activity beyond the bars. San Marcos river tubing is 30 minutes south: tube rental runs $25–$35/person depending on outfitter (Lions Club, Texas State Tubes, Don's Fish Camp all operate there). Outfitters include shuttle service. A Saturday tubing trip plus nights on Rainey Street is the classic trip structure.

TopGolf Austin bay rentals vary by time of day—check topgolf.com for current hourly rates. A 1–2 hour session for 6 people typically runs $7–$20/person for the bay alone. Add food and drinks and you're at $40–$60/person for the full outing.

Full experience: ~$150–200/person

Multiple activities: tubing Saturday morning, TopGolf Friday afternoon, both Rainey Street and 6th Street nights, plus Barton Springs or a boat rental option. Some groups add a brewery or afternoon activity. Most guys trips don't need more than 2 paid activities—the bars keep you busy.

What nobody tells you about Austin guys trip costs

Barton Springs parking and crowds. Barton Springs is $9 entry for non-resident adults, but parking nearby costs $20–$25. Go early (before 10am) or accept the parking fee. Weekends are packed.

The person booking the Airbnb carries $1,200–$2,100 depending on where you stay. Someone fronts the rental for 3 nights. Either collect everyone's share before the trip or log it as a shared expense so everyone can see what they owe. The longer you wait to settle, the weirder it gets.

Merch and incidentals. Austin-branded t-shirts, bar tabs, sunscreen, parking fees, food truck snacks—small purchases add up. Budget $20–$40/person for stuff you didn't plan for.

Surge pricing on late nights. Ubers after midnight on Friday and Saturday run 1.5–2x normal rates. A $20 ride home becomes $35–$40. If your group is out until 2am, budget extra for that last ride.

BBQ lines are real. Franklin Barbecue lines can be 2–3 hours on weekends. Go early or plan to miss it. Terry Black's (just south of downtown on Barton Springs Rd) has shorter waits and comparable quality at $35–$45/person—similar pricing to Franklin without the 2–3 hour line.

Most groups land in balanced. You get downtown access, multiple bar scenes, one or two paid activities, and enough cash to not stress every drink. The budget option works if your group actually commits to pre-gaming at the house. The comfortable option is for groups where money isn't a factor.

How groups keep it together

Book the Airbnb under one name, collect payment before you arrive. Venmo or PayPal each person their share the week before. Don't wait until Sunday—that's when the financial weirdness starts.

Set a group kitty for small shared expenses. Everyone puts in $25–$35 at the start for parking, groceries, group meals, and split Ubers. Way easier than Venmo-ing $4 for chips.

One person owns Uber ordering for group rides. If the same person requests every group trip, all the costs are in one place. Scan receipts and split them once at the end instead of six people arguing about who paid.

Decide upfront on settlement timing. Collect money before the trip, or log expenses as you go and settle when you get home. Both work. The worst approach: promise to "deal with it later"—that's when people get weird about money. Or skip the headache: use a YAAT group to handle the split automatically.

The bottom line

A guys trip to Austin doesn't require Vegas money. The flights are reasonable from most regions, the Airbnbs are reasonable, and the bars don't charge cover most nights. The main cost is drinks and how many BBQ meals you eat.

Your real cost comes down to how many nights you're hitting Rainey Street and 6th Street, whether you hit Franklin or settle for Terry Black's, and if you add tubing or another activity. Budget travelers save by pre-gaming at the house. Premium travelers don't skip Franklin and order freely.

If your group is going, booking the Airbnb 4–6 weeks out and locking in flights early saves you $100–$150/person compared to last-minute scrambles.
